This selfie features a young woman smiling and pointing at the logo on her sweatshirt. The sweatshirt is grey with a pink breast cancer ribbon in the center. Inscribed in the logo are the words, “Go Blue, Wear Pink” with a Michigan block “M” at the top of the ribbon.
Deliberative discourse uses persuasive rhetoric to convince its audience to take action in the future. Although the goal is to convince the audience of something, ultimately the decision is left solely in the hands of the audience. Philosopher Amelie Oksenberg Rorty discusses the importance of Aristotle's work and definition of deliberative and influential rhetoric in her studies. She writes, "Aristotle marks as central to deliberative rhetoric: considerations of prudence and justice, the projected political and psychological consequences of the decision and the likelihood of encouraging—or entrenching—similar rebellious attitudes amongst allies" (1992). In other words, Rorty speaks to the encouraging and persuasive nature of deliberative rhetoric as defined by Aristotle. Whether or not an author succeeds, the ultimate goal of the work is to produce a future action or change in audience members.
Founded in 2007, Go Blue, Wear Pink is a campus organization dedicated to fighting and finding a cure for Breast Cancer. As an active member of GBWP we have created campus wide events, mailed letters to family and friends, and sold personalized apparel to raise funds for research. The organization is especially active in October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Because this cause is personally important to me, I proudly wear the club’s apparel around campus.
In this particular selfie, the message I am sending to my audience is one that encourages future action. I am encouraging other to “Go Blue, Wear Pink”, whether this means getting involved in the organization, donating money, or simply raising awareness for the club and its cause. Pointing at the logo itself further cements the message. As the deliberative rhetoric denotes, however, the ultimate decision is left in the hands of the audience as to whether or not they will listen to what is being asked of them.
Thinking about the overarching theme of the image and what it reveals about my character, I would say that it definitely speaks to my philanthropic and community-service oriented behaviors. I have grown up learning the value of helping others and the importance of community service. Getting involved in philanthropic organizations in college was a high priority of mine. Working with peers my own age who feel passionately about the same cause has been an incredible experience and an amazing source of support for me on campus.
